Record-breaking performances, championships and pushes for the postseason – Cuesta athletics had a busy week. The men’s swim and dive team captured its sixth-straight Western State Conference title. Track and field has several conference leaders heading into regionals. Softball finished its season with a dominant win over Santa Monica College and baseball also finished its season.
Swim and Dive
Cuesta College swim and dive won the three-day 2026 Western State Conference Championship, crushing the competition by 340 points. The sixth-straight title marked the team’s third under Coach Greg Enloe and its 21st conference title since 1980. Men’s swimming dominated the competition at the 2026 Western State Conference Championships behind 2025 3C2A State Swimmer of the Year Grant Huston. The Cougars are hoping to bring home the team Gold at the 2026 3C2A State Championships in May.
On the other hand, for women’s swim and dive, the Cougars jumped up in the standings, finishing 3rd in the WSC. Returning All-American Annika Pauschek continues to lead the team in the lanes, as she tries to become one of Cuesta’s few aquatic athletes to earn all-state honors four times. The championship Cuesta College Cougars will prepare for the 3C2A State Championships at Orange Coast College April 30-May 2.
Track and Field
Cuesta College started with a great lead after posting 78.5 points at last weekend’s preliminary meet at Santa Clarita. The Cougars boasted a 30-point lead over current runner-up Moorpark, 78.5 to 48.5, as the men tried to win their second title ever. At the WSC championship, Sophomore Anthony Frere had one of the best performances of the day, finishing first in both the 800 and 1500 meters. Cuesta also got a big day from sophomore Weston Greenelsh, who ran one of the best 5000-meter marks in the conference.
In the field, freshman Matthew Taylor cleared a winning height in pole vault, and sophomore Heath Jones threw the top javelin throw of the meet. On the women’s side, freshman Bella Teresi won the discus to help lead a good day of competition in throwing events. Cuesta also had standout performances on the track from freshman Kennedy Mcadoo, who moved into seventh place on the Cuesta all-time list in 200 meters. In contrast, freshman Riley Passanisi was able to climb to third all-time in the 100-meter hurdles. Sophomore Kristy Huynh also had a big day, finishing second in high jump, third in long jump, and fourth in shot put. The Cougars will prepare for the 3C2A Regional Preliminaries on Saturday.
Baseball (20-20)
The baseball team finished up their regular season last week against LA Pierce College and Moorpark College. In a 7-5 loss to LA Pierce, Cuesta stayed competitive the whole time, but it wasn’t enough to overcome LA Pierce. Sophomore Jak Sinclair and sophomore AJ Martinez both led the Cougars offense, each collecting two hits and two RBI’s. Freshman relief pitcher Zach Savino came in during the seventh inning and was able to collect four strikeouts in two innings, but it wasn’t enough for Cuesta, 7-5, LA Pierce.
With the last game of the season, the Cougars collected a loss on the road to Moorpark, 6-2. Cuesta battled in this one with plenty of big plays on the offensive side. Freshman Hank Hansen reached base three times with a hit and a pair of walks, as well as scoring a run. Freshman Gavin Colombo tried to help Cuesta by driving in one of the Cougars two runs, as well as freshman Jesse Savino hitting an RBI single to bring in Cuesta’s only other run, and drawing two walks. Freshman relief pitcher Zach Savino entered the game in the fourth inning to try to help keep Cuesta in reach. Savino allowed one run and struck out two. This wasn’t enough for the Cougars, 6-2, Moorpark.
Softball (13-24)
Cuesta softball just finished up its regular season with a win on the road against Santa Monica. In their first meeting, the Cougars beat the Corsairs, 16-1, in a five-inning, run-rule victory. This time around, it was almost a repeat of the first meeting. The Cougars went deep six times and an incredible performance from Cuesta Women’s Student Athlete of the Month, sophomore Cierra Cloud. Cloud had two home runs on top of eight RBIs to help bring in eight out of the 18 runs from Cuesta. Sophomore Addy Finegan and sophomore Brielle Burt also helped Cuesta with each hitting two home runs as well. The Cuesta Cougars softball season ended with a 13-24 record, missing the playoffs.
Beach Volleyball (5-17)
Beach Volleyball just concluded its season at the Western State Conference Pairs Tournament in Ventura. The Cougars posted a combined 4-5 record, meaning four of their pairs advanced to the first round of competition. The Cougars finished the season with a 43-76 combined record in their individual matches and a 5-17 overall record, making this their third-straight season with that record.
