Cuesta College hosted the 2026 3C2A Regional Multi-Event Track and Field Championship on Tuesday and Wednesday. The participants’ scores will be used in both the conference championship and regionals, and will also serve as qualifying marks for the 2026 3C2A state championship.
“This event requires a lot of energy over two days,” Cuesta College head coach Robert Neely said.
The 3C2A Regional Open went exceptionally well for Cuesta Sophomore Kristy Huynh, who had excellent days of competition. She managed to finish in the top 15 for every sport, as well as taking 1st place in women’s shot put, finishing 8th in the women’s heptathlon, and placing 10th in the women’s 100-meter dash.
The format of the meet has been split to separate the conference and regional meets, allowing all multi-sport athletes to compete at the ground level.
“As we prepare for this event, we start to lessen the volume of work, to make sure we are fresh and sharp come competition time,” Neely said.
Freshman Matthew Taylor finished 16th in the men’s decathlon, scoring 2782 points, which will qualify him for the 2026 3C2A state championship. Day two of the race was positive again for Taylor as he finished 11th in the men’s decathlon, and then finished 16th in the 100-meter dash section 2. Taylor then proceeded to place 16th in the men’s shot put.
With Cuesta College hosting the event, Cougar athletes got a boost.
“Our athletes get home-field advantage. They get to sleep in their own beds, go through their own routines, and then compete in front of friends, family, and teammates,” Neely said.
After the regional meet, the Cougars will split their squad up with the distance team heading up to San Francisco for the Mike Fanelli Open on Friday and Saturday, while everyone else will be heading down south for the Moorpark Invitational.
