Black Student Success Week has been a statewide initiative since 2020, held in the last week of April to help Black students improve their educational outcomes and to address systemic inequality in educational programming.
The events will be held April 21 at Cuesta’s North County Campus, in the cafeteria from 12 – 2 p.m. and on April 22 at the SLO County Campus in the ASCC Courtyard from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The goal of the 2026 initiative is to examine what achievement traditionally looks like for Black students. There will be a film screening and food available in the cafeteria in North County and in the courtyard on SLO County’s campus.
The revolution theme encourages finding new and better ways to foster equity and involvement for Black students in higher education. There will be a series of webinars available to students and educators as a part of the California Community College Chancellor’s additional statewide programming to promote engagement and knowledge sharing.
The complete list of webinars included are available to view in the link.
EDITOR’S NOTE: After discussion and consideration, The Cuestonian has decided to delete the original image on this story and replace the image with a non-AI-generated image.
At The Cuestonian, we have a thorough AI policy around our use of images, as human coverage is always preferred as a visual in journalism. However, in situations where human coverage can not be done ethically or done without violating the staging principles of photojournalism, outside images are used. Although the use of this image falls within our policy, we see the harm it has caused, specifically to artists in our community, and apologize for that.
Moving forward, The Cuestonian will be prioritizing the use of staff illustrators and non-AI- generated stock images when human coverage is not possible. We will also be conducting an internal review of our AI policy, and continuing to work on ways to build trust and make our audience feel better represented.
