The Canvas platform for Cuesta College has been restored and is once again functional and accessible to all students.
As previously reported, the cyberattack on the company Instructure led to Cuesta’s Canvas program becoming unavailable to all students and faculty, disrupting the afternoon college activities on Wednesday. “I had to email my professor, because the deadline was that night and I obviously couldn’t upload my work on Canvas; it is throwing me off,” said Mia Miller, a student at Cuesta
Students were notified via email at 8:24 a.m. that Canvas had been restored on Friday. The full extent of the data breach at Cuesta is still being investigated.
Furthermore, the notion held by some students that the Instructure data breach has also prevented the full course schedule from being published is inaccurate. According to Vice President of Instruction Jason Curtis, the two are separate issues. “The issues with the course schedule … have nothing to do with the cyberattack on Instructure that brought down the Canvas service,” Curtis said. “The course schedule is built directly on the college’s own servers in Banner, our student information system. Instructure’s Canvas is a cloud-based service delivered from a distance.”
