The San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder’s office posted the results of one of Cuesta College’s focal races, with Peter Sysak winning reelection for his District 4 Board of Trustee’s position by 124 votes.
The District 4 Board of Trustee’s position presides over Arroyo Grande, Oceano, and Nipomo. The focus of the position is to govern over Cuesta College’s South County and to vote on items presented in board meetings.
On Dec. 7, 2022, the San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder’s office posted a PDF file to their general election page titled “Final Official Election Results.†The results show a 0.64% vote margin, with Sysak leading over Specht. Specht had 49.68% of the vote, while Sysak had 50.32%.
This means that Sysak retained his trustee position, while Specht will have to step down as challenger until the next term cycle.

It was a very competitive race (lost by only 124 votes against a two-term incumbent) which tells me that this community is hungry for better representation. It was my first campaign, and I hope to share what I learned with anyone who wants to stand up and make a difference. I will continue to work alongside historically marginalized students in the fight for educational equity and social justice across our county, in my professional life at Cal Poly and in my work with the Central Coast Coalition for Undocumented Student Success.
“I am looking forward to helping with the continued success of our students,†Sysak said.
The next date for Cuesta College’s District 4 Trustee race will be held during the general election on Nov. 3, 2026.
