Cuesta College’s Veterans Resource Center encouraged all attendees to wear green to “Luck of the Vets†resource fair. The fair featured various local agencies specifically aimed at providing information on the local resources and services available to veterans.
“We just hope we can get a lot of information out to vets on what the community has to offer,†said Karen Andrews, Cuesta College’s Veterans Affairs Certifying Official.
The event was put on for student and local veterans in the community. The fair was set up at Cuesta College’s San Luis Obispo campus on March 17 (Saint Patrick’s Day) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in room 5401.
Several tables were scattered around the room displaying Saint Patrick’s Day themed decorations with goodies for attendees to take, along with a free corn beef lunch, a projector screen presentation and booths displaying each local agency. Some of the agencies that were on site for the event included:
- Cuesta College’s Active Minds Club, which aims to increase awareness on issues regarding mental health by providing resources and encouragement to seek help and a supportive environment.
- New Life K9s, a local non-profit that trains service dogs for veterans that have post traumatic stress disorder.
- Waypoint Coaching & Consulting, an organization dedicated to providing free coaching to returning veterans who are returning to civilian life.
- Honor Flight Central Coast, an organization created to honor America’s veterans for their sacrifices by bringing veterans to Washington D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials.
Though this particular event is unrelated to Cuesta’s Book of the Year event, the school is teaming up with local libraries to bring the community a month full of veteran-themed discussions and workshops.
